referred to as the fifth fuel and smart metering are currently the subject of dis-cussion among the European institutions. Landis+Gyr explained how the fifth fuel can be maximised at a debate organised by the European Energy Forum at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Zug, Switzerland, December 3 – Vattenfall, the largest foreign investor in the Polish energy market, has expanded its contract with Landis+Gyr, a leading provider of energy management solutions, for its Gridstream Converge system. The system, which reads 5,000 meter points, will now cover almost 10, 000 meter points, making it the largest data readout system using GPRS technology in central Europe.  


Zug, Switzerland, November 12, 2009 - Mosenergo, one of Russia’s largest energy generation companies, and Landis+Gyr, the global leader in next generation energy management, have agreed to expand the commercial metering solution that the two firms first implemented in 2007.  The goal of the expanded solution is to further improve Mosenergo’s information management, business processes and increase its energy efficiency.


Jyskä, Finland, October 28 – Landis+Gyr and Järvi-Suomen Energia have signed a contract for the delivery of 80, 000 smart meters and a meter reading service until 2018. The installation of smart meters will commence in 2010 and will take about three years to complete.

The company will deliver over 600 grid meters to the Jiangsu Power Grid enabling improved utility energy efficiency and both the quality and availability of energy data.

ENTEGA bought its first smart meters from Landis+Gyr last year and is now taking the next step by purchasing Landis+Gyr’s latest Smart Metering software, ‘Gridstream AIM’. The scalable system will integrate 500,000 meters of its currently contracted 1 million meter points. OPEN is working to deliver a comprehensive set of open and public standards for an Advanced Metering Infrastructure. This will support multi-energy applications (Electricity, Gas, Water and Heat), based on the agreement of the most relevant European stakeholders in this area.


Landis+Gyr in the Czech Republic has won a significant service contract to support the further rollout of its SuperConverge system for one of the largest utility groups in Europe, the ČEZ Group. The three year contract has been signed with ČEZ ICT Services, which is the IT-provider for the ČEZ Group. Thanks to the system’s flexibility, SuperConverge will now be rolled out in other countries in which ČEZ is expanding its operations.


The European Parliament has reached agreement on the EU Energy Package, stating that all households across the EU must be equipped with smart meters by 2022. In addition, the Parliament has heard a first reading of the Energy Efficiency of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and voted to further speed up smart meter deployment by requiring that all new buildings and those undergoing renovation be equipped with smart meters. 

The decisions mean that smart metering will play a leading role in enabling the EU to meet its ambitious environmental and energy efficiency goals. The EU Energy Package states that 80 percent of households across the EU are to be fitted with smart meters by 2020, while the EPBD states that the Directive is transposed into national law as early as 2012.
