Our History
For more than a century Landis+Gyr has helped utilities manage energy better.
- Building a global meter business
Since our inception in 1896, Landis+Gyr (originally known as "Electrotechnishes Institut Theiler and Co.") has been designing and manufacturing high quality, state of the art electricity meters.
Headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, our worldwide access to a highly skilled workforce and distribution system has enabled the company to prosper.
Our rich global history has led us to become an industry leader in energy management with proven technology and one of the broadest advanced metering portfolios in the industry.
As early as 1924, Landis+Gyr experienced global expansion with the establishment of our first overseas offices in New York and Australia.
We continued to maximize our growth via the launch of the first electronic high precision electricity meter in 1970, and by acquiring meter producer Duncan Electronics of Lafayette, Indiana in 1976.
With this acquisition Landis+Gyr experienced exponential growth and the rapid development of innovative leading edge technologies to meet new market demands.
- Leveraging the meter to become a system device
The early 1980’s brought the advent of electronic meters, and Landis+Gyr was there at the forefront, developing and launching its first range of digital meters in the industrial and commercial segments.
In 1987, Landis+Gyr acquired MCC Powers of Chicago – a company with an excellent position on the US building management market.
Technological change and the emerging globalization of markets as a consequence of increasing liberalization and deregulation require a reorientation of the group. Landis+Gyr moves ahead with the development and rollout of electronic products and launches the first residential electricity meter.
Throughout the late 1990s, the company continued its global activity and expansion via a series of different investors and owners, including Elektrowatt, KKR and Siemens, which enabled Landis+Gyr to leverage off of a well-established history in the energy metering industry.
The systems and service business is extended, and Landis+Gyr develops into a market-oriented industry leading provider of solutions for energy efficiency, building systems and security engineering.
Bayard Capital of Australia acquired Landis+Gyr in 2004, and continued to expand by adding other companies to the Group, thereby creating the world's powerhouse in energy metering solutions.
For more than a decade, Bayard successfully combined positive environmental outcomes with the company's culture to develop Landis+Gyr into the preeminent force for energy management and conservation.
- Pushing meters to become smart
Under Bayard’s ownership, we changed our organizational set up into a regional structure aligning all activities in the regions North America, South America, UK/Pre-Payment, Europe and Asia Pacific and across the businesses, which still keep their brand identity. This multi-brand strategy and an accelerated innovation circle built the base for significant organic growth.
Acquired in 2006 by Finnish Enermet Group, Hunt Technologies and Cellnet Technologies, both from the US, Landis+Gyr realized a quantum leap in implementing an aggressive growth strategy.
Enermet and Hunt enlarged our skill set and expertise along the value chain of energy utilities significantly. Cellnet’s contracted 14 million endpoints together with a unique track record in providing AMI, SCADA and DA network solutions to electric, gas and water utilities, boosted our positioning as forerunner in as an Advanced Metering Infrastructure provider, offering the latest total “smart” solutions and services, and enabling process efficiency and the sustainable use of energy.
- Smart Metering - the cornerstone of a Smart Grid
In 2011, Landis+Gyr was acquired by the Toshiba Corporation.
This new arrangement, recognized globally as having established a world-class partnership in the highly promising field of energy management solutions, has intensified the focus on smart metering technology as an essential building block in the development of smart grids – an industry term for intelligent distribution networks that are necessary in the evolution towards a sustainable future.
With operations spanning more than 30 countries and serving all of the major utilities in every continent, Landis+Gyr continues to empower utilities and end-customers to improve their energy efficiency, reduce their energy costs and contribute to a sustainable use of resources.
