AEP Texas Reaches Half-way point in Gridstream Advanced Metering Deployment

ATLANTA, July 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — AEP Texas recently expanded its agreement with Landis+Gyr to install Gridstream(TM) advanced meters across the utility's entire service territory.

The agreement comes after the AEP Texas smart grid project surpassed the half-way mark by successfully deploying more than 500,000 advanced meters. Landis+Gyr’s original contract with AEP Texas covered about 720,000 meters. The expanded contract includes the remaining 280,000 meters located in rural areas of the utility’s service territory.

“The proven success of the Gridstream RF mesh network in rural applications had a big influence on this contract extension,” said Prasanna Venkatesan, Senior Vice President of Systems and Services at Landis+Gyr. “We’re excited by this opportunity to extend a very successful project and position AEP Texas to enable energy management and grid automation solutions across the utility’s service territory.”

AEP Texas began deploying the Gridstream network and advanced meters in 2009, with a goal of replacing all meters by 2014. Gridstream is a single-network communications solution for advanced metering, grid automation and consumer energy management applications.

Headquartered in Corpus Christi, AEP Texas is a transmission and distribution utility delivering electricity to more than 1 million homes and businesses in a service territory of nearly 100,000 square miles. Major cities served include Corpus Christi, Abilene, McAllen, Harlingen, San Angelo, Vernon, Victoria and Laredo. AEP Texas is part of the American Electric Power system, one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, delivering electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states.
