ENEL, Ampla and Landis+Gyr bring an advanced metering solution to Brazil
Rio de Janeiro – June 01, 2012 – The first step toward a new concept of intelligent energy management has been taken in Buzios by Ampla Energia e Servicos S.A. the Electricity Distribution Company of ENDESA Brasil and ENEL Distribuzione SpA with the installation of a new advanced smart metering infrastructure.
The first 200 advanced smart meters are now installed and operating in the customers’ premises of Ampla Energia e Serviços S.A. in Buzios, Rio de Janeiro State. This innovative smart meter solution is the result of a successful collaboration between ENEL Distribuzione SpA and Landis+Gyr Equipamentos de Medição Ltda.
The initiative is leveraging the know-how gathered by ENEL Group in a series of global smart grid projects as well as from metering know-how provided by Landis+Gyr. The smart metering solution deployed in Buzios is powered by the open communication protocol known as Meters and More and exploits ENEL’s 10 years of experience in the 32 million meters roll out in Italy and in the ongoing deployment of 13 million smart meters in Spain as well as Landis+Gyr’s global leadership in this field.
Landis+Gyr has been contributing with the long term technology development in Ampla, with the innovative anti-tampering metering solution SGP+M, popularly known as Ampla Chip, currently used by 650.000 Ampla’s customers.
This smart metering solution, based on the automated metering infrastructure developed, deployed and operated by ENEL, in Italy and Spain, and on Landis+Gyr`s E34A and E650 electronic smart meters, represents a key-step in the framework of “Cidade Inteligente Buzios”, the first smart city project in Brazil lead by Ampla and promoted by ANEEL – the Brazilian Federal Energy Agency.
Búzios has been selected by ENEL Group as a living lab of Smart Grid technologies. “Cidade Inteligente Buzios” integrates an innovative urban infrastructure for energy efficiency, by promoting both environmental and economic sustainability; services and technologies together with the public and private sector, contributing in saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions.
