Landis+Gyr and partners win Wiener Netze smart metering rollout

The Wiener Netze GmbH has awarded the contract for the modernization of the Vienna electricity grid to a consortium including Landis+Gyr. The biggest such contract ever awarded in Austria; it is due to start in August 2017 and will be completed by 2020.

Zug/Vienna – September 6, 2017 –Another success for Landis+Gyr in Austria: the world leader in smart metering has succeeded in signing another major contract with the Wiener NetzeGmbH. The Austrian branch of the globally active company will be able to make a significant contribution to the largest smart metering project in Austria.

The Wiener Netze GmbH is an electricity and natural gas distribution system operator and is part of the Wiener Stadtwerke Holding AG. This is a 100% subsidiary of the city of Vienna and the largest energy supplier in Austria. The company’s most ambitious project is due to begin in August 2017: 80% of the smart meter population in Vienna should be covered by the end of 2020. This will include some 1.2 million measuring points. The city’s investment in the energy network of the future is based on the framework of a decree issued by the Federal Minister of the Economy, Family and Youth from April 2012 and has been estimated in the region of several hundred million Euros.

The contract has been awarded to a Siemens-led consortium with Landis+Gyr and Iskraemeco. With 400,000 measuring points, Landis+Gyr will supply about a third of the meters required. The vast majority of these will be in the form of smart electricity meters.

«We are proud to be part of this showcase project», said Helmut Scherzer, Sales Manager Landis+Gyr Austria. «To have been selected by the largest energy supplier in Austria, is both a result of our long-standing partnership with Wiener Netze and recognition of the successful hard work that we have been performing in other large-scale projects for many years.»
