Landis+Gyr Signs Advanced Metering Contract with PHI
Under the agreement, the Washington D.C.-based utility plans to deploy the technology-rich Landis+Gyr FOCUS™ family of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) smart meters for residential, industrial and commercial customers throughout Delaware. Smart metering solutions, expected to revolutionize energy management and grid reliability, provide a two-way flow of data between customer meters and utility back-end systems. With this two-way data flow, utilities will be able to offer customers a broad array of new pricing, demand response, and energy automation options that enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electric grid. Customers will benefit from more information, expanded choices, simpler and smarter management of their energy as well as the potential to reduce the environmental impact of their energy use.
“PHI’s selection of Landis+Gyr as its primary AMI meter supplier is clear demonstration that we have the leading product in the marketplace today,” said Landis+Gyr North American CEO Richard Mora. “We view the Delaware deployment as the important first step in our cooperation with PHI as they undertake a significant multi-year regional smart grid deployment which will empower their customers to manage energy better.”
“PHI’s vision is to change the relationship we have with our customers,” said Joseph M. Rigby, president and chief executive officer of PHI. “With new digital smart meters and the smart grid, PHI’s utilities will be able to provide up-to-date energy information and tools that will help our customers manage their energy use and costs. PHI is proud to be a leader in the transformation of the electric delivery industry.”
Landis+Gyr’s electric meter contract is part of PHI’s smart meter rollout which is designed to first bring advanced metering technology to its entire Delaware customer base. Regulatory approval has already been secured. PHI is also currently undergoing regulatory review for further AMI deployment in Maryland, New Jersey and Washington D.C. Landis+Gyr will work on this project with partner Silver Spring Networks, provider of the communications solution. Smart meters typically account for a significant portion of the total cost of a typical AMI rollout.
In recent months, Landis+Gyr has unveiled a number of major AMI deals with utilities across the globe, including the biggest yet announced in Texas — a four-year advanced metering contract with utility Oncor for more than 3 million homes and small businesses, in addition to selection as the primary meter vendor for Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E’s) deployment of over 5 million smart electricity meters.
